"
Wow! What a
great Sunday we have of NFL Footy. Some very tough games to pick. I'm
going with gut feel on some of them while others I'm going for teams that
I like that are a chance. Here goes.
Moose's Week 3 Picks:
Mine are in Green.
Detroit OVER Green Bay by 1
"Wow another tough one to pick. Lions
were horrid last year, Packers were better last week. I'll go for the
Lions seeing it is in Detroit. I do hope Brett Favre has a good year
though."
Tennessee OVER Miami by 1
"Yes Dolphins. I look forward to seeing
Daunte Culpepper the new Dolphins QB having a great year from now on.
I'll be watching Ricky Williams play at 5pm today here in Calgary in the
CFL as the Toronto Argonauts come to take on the Calgary Stampeders.
Ricky will be playing his 1st game in approx. 8 weeks after breaking his
arm."
N.Y. Jets OVER Buffalo by 2
"I'm going for gut feel on this toughie.
Jets! If Chad Pennington who I think is a great QB when fit, if he plays
well the Jets can win. I don't think the Bills are that good but it is in
Buffalo so it's a tough game to pick."
Houston OVER Washington by 1
"Redskins. I think they are better than
what they have showed so far this year."
Minnesota OVER Chicago by 4
"A tough one. I want to stick with one
of my favorite teams the Vikings as it is at Minnesota but I have to go
with the... No I'm sticking with Vik's after just receiving a awesome pic
from a Vik's Cwoa babe.... Wow! Got to go to Mates Club
Cincinnati OVER Pittsburgh by 4
"Yes Bengals for me. They are looking
very good while the Steelers seem to be in a slight Super Bowl hangover
at the moment. This should be a rippa of a game. I saw this week that
Carson Palmer was way up on the list of highest paid US athletes. Good on
him"
Jacksonville OVER Indianapolis by 2
"Wow! Moose has gone for the Jags. It's
tempting but no I'll stick with the Colts."
Carolina OVER Tampa Bay by 8
"Panthers for me. They are 0-2 so far.
Many were picking them to go to the super Bowl for the NFC and I think
they can but they better start winning."
Baltimore OVER Cleveland by 9
"Yes Ravens. They are a good team now
that they have a very good QB in former Titans Steve McNair."
New England OVER Denver by 10
"Ahhhhhhh. Patriots! This is one of the
only times in the past 2-3 years that I have picked against the Broncos.
I hope I get this one wrong and the Bronco's start to play footy."
Philadelphia OVER San Francisco by 6
"Damn this is a bit of a toughie as
well. 49ers have improved, they are at home. I don't think the Eagles are
that great but I suppose I better pick the Eagles."
New Orlean OVER Atlanta by 5.
"I've thought about this game a lot. I
am a huge Michael Vick fan and he has been in great form so far this
season. The Saints are definitely much improved this year. I'll go with
the Saints mainly because it is the 1st game in New Orleans since
hurricane Katrina and I think the hype and atmosphere will get the Saints
up."
St Louis vs Arizona
"Another interesting game. I'll go for
Cardinals. Moose is giving me a head start again this week as he forgot
this game."
New York Giants vs Seattle.
"I'll go for the Seahawks only because
it is in Seattle. Moose wake up! You forgot 2 games again this week!"
After a very average Week 1 I
kicked Moose's butt in Week 2 getting 12 out of 16 for a total of 21
after 2 Rounds." Myk

Jacksonville 9, Pittsburgh 0
From Moose "Game Balls Week Two:
1) Ryan Longwell, K-passer, Minnesota
2) Atlanta Falcons Offencive Line, especially ex-U/H. Warrior, Kynan
Forney
3) Joey Gallaway, WR, Tampa Bay
4) LaDainian Tomlinson, RB, San Diego
5) Rex Grossman, QB, Chicago
Honourable Mention: Peyton Manning, who tied Johnny Unitas all-time
Colts' pass completions mark for the franchise but Unitas played the
Colts when they were the REAL Colts, in "Bal-mer". Eli Manning [why
didn't they play this well against EACH OTHER a week ago?} for his 4
TDs in the 4th Qtr win over the Eagles. Rudi Johnson, RB, Cincinnati.
Milestones this past
weekend:
There were an NFL record tying three OT games this past weekend. There
have been six weekends in League History when there have been three OTs.
Last weekend there were three shutouts. There was another one last
night as Jax blew away the Stealers. This is the second time in NFL
history there have been four shutouts in the first two weeks of the
season.
It appears I was right and it'll be a lllonnngggg year for the
following clubs: Denver, who barely won over a depleted K.C. squad that
is being under coached, Oakland, Miami with it's nutty Coach, Tamap Bay
which I said had let the wrong QB go (Brian Griese, who got minutes v.
Detroit for Chicago) and of course Green Bay despite a decent effort
for Brett Favre, who probably should have retired two years ago. Poor
Art T. Shell has dropped down to .570 winning percentage, still
respectable after De Raidehs 0-2 start.
More Records to be Proud of: Tom Terrific, er, ah Brady is now the
NFL's highest winning percentage QB passing Dallas all-time best Roget
Staubach, with a .740 winning percentage after Sunday's win over the
Jets. Third all-time is John Elway and forth Bob Griese, Brian's dad,
who took Miami to three straight Super Bowls in the '70's.
Team Record: The Atlanta Falcons rushed for an all-time high 306 yds.,
on the ground behind an Offence with three ex-Warriors in it; WR Ashley
Lelie, OLm Kynan Forney and reserve Adrian Klemm. Ar.FL Players making
an impact this weekend: Detroit WR Mike Furrey, Dallas K Mike
Vanderjagt, Cincy KR Reggie Swinton, N.Y. G-Men K Jay Feely, Arizona
Cards QB Kurt Warner, Tennessee K Rob Bironas
Former CFL Players making it good in the NFL this past Weekend were:
Special Teams gunner Marc Boerigter, Green Bay, K Vanderjagt, KR
Swinton, WR Joe Horn, New Orlean, Philly H Jeff Garcia, Washington TE
Mike Sellers, Indy DB Nick Harper.
A Bad Situation. No matter how you look at it, Tennessee Coach Jeff
Fisher is screwed. He'll be made to be the bad guy no matter what he
does. He was all prepared to go it with old buddy QB Steve McNair who
he went to the Super Bowl with in Jan. '00, but management (read: Bud
Adams) wouldn't let McNair, despite the fact he was STILL UNDER
CONTRACT with the team, practice with the Titans this past off-season.
Then he sends McNair, a franchise QB to Baltimore, [a rival of
Tennessee's and he helps them to a 2-0 start]. So Coach 'Fish', as he
is called starts to prepare for the Billy Volek Era; wait, Vince Young
gets drafted, without Fisher's consent. OK - so they get the second
best QB prospect in the draft (Leinart of course, that's who)...So
throughout camp Fisher runs the team with the competent Volek, with
Young behind him...Then Adams goes out and signs vet Kerry Collins.
Collins is given the third QB job and last year's third, Matt Mauck,
the ex-Bronco draftee is jettisoned.
The right before
opening day, it's announced that Collins will start and Young "will see
action" [he played one series last week]...Where is Volek?! In week two
Collins played the first half and Young the second half...still no
Volek. Why doesn't the players union do something! You can't go and
literally promise a guy, who's been with your club for 3 yrs., a
starting job and then all of a sudden he's number three! That's horse
(bleep)! Volek should move on. Actually he's doing OK since Young and
Collins are getting the stuffings beat out of them. Coach Fisher, the
second longest tenured Coach in the League is hanging by a thread and
Volek has been violated! And in the end, Fisher will get the
blame...What else are rich owners good for!?
"Volek signed this week with the San
Diego Chargers!" Myk
Week 3 Picks:
Minnesota OVER Chicago by 4

Tennessee OVER Miami by 1
N.Y. Jets OVER Buffalo by 2

Carolina OVER Tampa Bay by 8

Myk Aussie

I'm here with Mat McBriar
the Aussie and now Dallas Cowboys punter at the NCAA Hula Bowl
Cowboy's Mat McBriar and Jets Ben Graham lead the NFL Punting Averages
after week 1. They are both Australians!
This is great to see and a definite 1st that 2 Aussies lead the NFL
Averages in Punting. I believe it can last as both of these guys are
excellent punters.
Mat
McBriar the former Aussie Footy player from Melbourne and NCAA
University of Hawaii punter leads the NFC with 266 yards, his longest a
62 yarder for a average of 53.2. Ben Graham the former AFL, Australian
Football League Geelong Cats Champ leads the AFC with 199 yards, his
longest being 58 yards for a average of 49.8. You can check out a
interview I did with Mat at the NCAA Hula Bowl

If anybody wants a primary example of why I hate Instant Replay and why
it DOES NOT work, try last weekends game, Miami at Pittsburgh. Nick
Saban, he WAS right to throw the red challenge flag after VA's Heath
Miller's NON-score (the last time Pitts tried that, they won the Stupor
Bowl v. Seattle, on Mr. Motorcycle wrecks NON-TD). Now I like Heath
Miller as much as any Virginian, but he DID NOT score! Why wasn't the
play CHALLENGABLE? The call was in the words of the immortal Marv Levy,
from NFL films clip: "Chickenbleep"! Now the CFL has a sorry Instant
Replay system and so does the NCAA! Now that is "Chickenbleep."

Updated,
Wed Sept 6 06 "Moose's 06 NFL team by team previews!
Jeff George Back then Cut! Kerry Collins Back!
Moose's review of the new film "Invincible"! Massive amounts of NFL MYKwebTV!" Myk Aussie
Jeff George was not surprisingly cut by
the Raiders after being called up last week as QB insurance.
From Mon Sept 4 Wow! I was amazed to hear the name Jeff
George again! I filmed Jeff after a Vikings great win against the Packers
years ago on Monday Night Footy. This was some of the very 1st NFL web
sports casting that I did. It was a great night in Minneapolis and a very
funny part of my movie "Football Fan Frenzy". Jeff's time as QB at the
Vikings was possibly his most successful.
For Moose's detailed team by team
NFL previews click on the team menu to the left.
From Moose "Jeff
George Back! He has just been resigned by the Oakland 'Raidahs'
this week and Kerry Collins, who played for the Raiders last year,
signed with the Tennessee Titans or 'Tits' as the Aussies might say.
But more on Collins later in this report. Jeff George, Peck's original
bad boy, was a top first round pick with the Indianapolis Colts in
1990. He had a tumultuous four year stay with the Indy Colts and bolted
to the Atlanta Falcons in 1994.
He played the four WR
Offence for User-Friendly Coach June Jones, III, a former CFL/NFL QB,
who once QB'd the Falcons in the late Seventies. The Falcons went 7-9-0
that first year, with Darryl 'Mouse' Davis, godfather of the
Run-and-Shoot Offence, who Coached June and former Cardinal pivot Neil
Lomax, in College at Portland St., in the NCAA Div. III.
In 1995 George seemed
to be picking up the system and keeping his nose clean, as the old
saying goes. The Falcons finished 9-8-0 in '95 but lost in the
playoffs, 37-21 to/at Green Bay. The floor was about to cave in. In the
offseason, the Falcons reacquired Cajan QB Bobby Hebert and George
didn't like that. Hebert had been a very good QB with the Saints and
had a winning record, but no experience in the R-n-S Offence. In an
early season game, George changed a play Coach Jones, now H.Coach of
the Hawai'i Warriors, had sent in. He threw an INT. that was returned
for a TD. When he came off the bench, Coach Jones point for him to sit
down. Jones told Hebert to start warming up. Now think about this
folkes, Jones DID not say, "George, you're out, Hebert pronounced
'A'-Bear, you're in. George went ape..... (deleted expletive) and
started to berate the quiet, studious, religious Jones in front of the
whole team. Jones simply turned to him and told him THEN, 'You're
through.' Did June mean through for the series? Day? Career in Atlanta?
George, this was picked by CBS, who was covering the game told Coach
Jones, 'Kiss my a....s pr.....k!'. The Falcons lost the game and ended
up the season 4-12-0. The whole Coaching staff would be fired, although
they allowed Jones contract to expire.]
The following Monday
Jones phoned every team in the NFL and CFL...Nobody wanted George.
Jones phoned the NFL head office in Nuevo York and placed George name
on the waiver wire. When he was interviewed that evening, Jones simply
said he would not then accept any apology from George (not that George
offered) and George was no longer welcome their on Falcons property.
Tuesday, the next day, he was waived from the League. Nobody picked him
up the $100 waiver fee. When the season was over, George signed a
two-year deal with Oakland and played there through 1998. In 1999 he
signed for one year with Minnesota (he returned there for one more year
in '03). In 2000 he signed on to play for Dan Snyder's Real Live
Fantasy Football in Washington.
He was released by
Coach Marty Schottenheimer after two games into the '01 season.
Schottenheimer's only comment was that 'he was a disruption in the
locker room...' In '02 he signed with Seattle and did not play as a
reserve QB that year. In '04 he signed on with the Bears and did not
play as a reserve QB. In '05 the Bears placed his name on the
retired/did not report/reserve list and he wasn't in the NFL, CFL or
Ar.FL. According to the Vikings, Seahawks and Bears, George was a model
citizen and was very helpful to the young QBs on those teams. In fact
Matt Hasselbeck, Seattle's QB said in a USA Today article around Super
Bowl time last year, he was a very solid teammate. I hope so. Jeff
George, along with John Elway, Dan Marino, Warren Moon, Joe Namath and
Timmy Chang has one of the greatest 'releases' on passes of any QBs I
have ever seen. His lifetime combined stats are: 27,727 yds., and a
47-74 record with six teams, regular season and playoffs together. He
stil has the arm, but previously with the Raiders he had played for Jon
Gruden not Art Shell. The reason the Raiders signed George this week
was the thought of going into the season with only Marques Tuiososopo,
Aaron Brooks and Andrew Walter seemed too scary for Shell. But was it
senile Al Davis' idea or Shell's to bring in George who is now 36?
On to
Kerry Collins...Collins
was the top draft pick for expansion Carolina Panthers back in their
rookie year, 1995. By 1997 Collins asked to be dropped to third string,
he was mentally exhausted. He also had bouts with booze and problems
with teammates there was well. In 1998 he signed with then Mike Ditka's
Saints. He lasted one year. He signed with the New York G-men in 1999
and sat behind Kent Graham, who later played for Washington and
Pittsburgh. Collins helped lead the Giants to the Super Bowl following
the '00 season where they were blown out by the Baltimore Ravens, with
former Stallions LB O.J. Brigance, 34-7 in Super Bowl XXXV. Collins has
since moved around the NFL and now is number two with the Tennessee
Titans. So much for top pick Vince Young and young vet Billy Volek, who
was promised the starting role if Steve McNair left - left, he was
practically evicted! Ironically enough, now McNair is with the Ravens,
who I expect back in the playoffs this year. Collins I would rather
have now than George, but what is it with these guys? The NFL spoiled
them with too much money? Is it the players Association? Why do these
guys get so depressed (Collins) or bigheaded (George)?
Now onto the the other 'side-of-the-coin', as they say:
'Invincible', Walt Disney films, starring Marc Wahlberg as Vince Papale.
Leave it to Hollyweird to take a good 'do-it-yourself made football
hero' and make a movie that barely remakes real life. The NFL films
Vince Papale, THE REAL Vince Papale, the real 'Rocky' of Philadelphia
is much better than the Hollywood one. In 1974 the new World Football
League came out when the NFL had it's first strike of three that
transpired among union players, in the summer of 1974. Thus, no
preseason. The WFL started to play it's ambitious 20-week schedule in
July that year (same time as the CFL) and one of it's most remarkable
players was a 28-year-old teacher, who only ran track in Philly High
School and at St. Joseph's College. Vince Papale was the Philadelphia
Bell's best possession receiver that year with 32 pass receptions as a
3rd receiver. Birmingham won that first 'World Bowl', 22-21 over Jack
Pardee's (Orlando) Florida Blazers. Philadelphia, 9-11-0 missed the
playoffs by a hair, losing the last spot to the Honolulu Hawai'ians. In
1975, the New World Football League as it was called that year, crashed
and burned after 11 games. Papale and 311 other players were all of a
sudden out of work.
In early 1976 Philadelphia Eagles new Coach Dick Vermeil announced a
try out. 325 'players' (people I should say) showed up and only Papale
got an invitation to attend the regular training camp {I would think
his two Pro seasons right across town with the hometown Bell had
something to do with it. But Disney doesn't even mention that!}. In
'Invincible', the smallish, unattractive Marc Wahlberg looks nothing
like the handsome, distinguished, 6'2", 200 lb. Papale! Papale also
used to run five miles a day through Phildelphia to stay in shape. In
the movie Wahlberg did NOT even play on the field in his football game
shots! His role was played by Orlando Predator Arena League star, Clif
Dell (note the one 'f', Myk). Also a gross error on the part of the
movie makers is the seen where Wahlberg/Papale tackles a Giants (in
real life it was 5'9" 175 lb. Jimmy Robinson) punt returner he's shown
returning the fumble nearly the length of the field. In real life, it
was only ten yards. But the ruling was Papale couldn't advance the
ball. In the movie they made out like Vince won the game. In real life
the Eagles did win 13-0, but it took three more plays to score after
the Papale fumble recovery. Rating: Two-and-one-half stars.
Who was Herb Mulkey?
Before Vince there was Washington F/A Herb Mulkey, who had no College
experience but made Washington's 1972 roster as a KR-2RB. In 1974,
Mulkey made the Pro Bowl as a kick returner. By the time Vince Papale
made the Eagles, Mulkey had retired. Have a nice week! Picks for Week
