Fri,
Dec 3, 05 "The history of the Snow Bowl thanks to Totaal-CFLer Saskfan in
Winnipeg, Jim Wolf!" Myk Aussie
From
Jim today
"This is from my site file. It needs to be updated with the 2004 (East 21, West 6 -
Snowman Len Preston) and 2005 results (East 12, West 0).
THE SNOW BOWL - THE TRADITION CONTINUES!!!
The Snow Bowl is a game that allows fans of Canadian football to play a game
the day before the actual Grey Cup in the Grey Cup host city. This game has
had players from Canada, the United States, Japan, South Korea, South Africa
and other places join in the fun.
The trophy (shown on the Snowman page) is not a grandiose thing, but the
game really isn't about the trophy. It's about getting together for some fun
and football. It doesn't matter the age, come on out and play! If you don't
want to play, be a referee or a yardsman! Just come out and cheer if that's
all you want to do!
1997 - In the beginning
In 1997, the visitors of TOTAL-CFL web site, once run by the inimitable Brad
Lawryk, had their first Meet and Greet in Edmonton. It was a grand gathering
in the Grey Cup host city, but these people wanted to make it better. The
question was "How?" The answer was simple: A football game! Top
1998 - Game 1 - West 14 East 0
In 1998, the first Snow Bowl was played in Winnipeg, Manitoba. There wasn't
a lot of snow, but it was a great time. The West won 14-0, courtesy of
Mookie the Bomber Fan's two touchdown passes. Mookie returns to the game
this year; hopefully he'll bring the winning touch back to the Western
All-Stars, who have seen the Eastern Champions take three straight Snow
Bowls in his absence. Top
1999 - Game 2 - East 40 West 15
1999 saw the Snow Bowl make history. It was played on Field Turf, an
artificial surface that looks like grass. Little did the Snow Bowlers know
that Field Turf would become an actual surface on a CFL field - used by the
Ottawa Renegades! The East had a solid 40-15 victory. One of the champions,
East Side Wally, kissed the Snow Bowl Trophy and caused the miniature Grey
Cup to fall off! That was a blessing, because it made drinking out of the
Cup easier for Big Bass Man and the boys!
Loyal Lou from Baltimore made some Windows Media clips of Snow Bowl
participants (456 KB) and Snow Bowl game action (415 KB).
The Snow Bowl also raised money for charity that year. The players and fans
donated over $200 for a program sponsored by former Calgary Stampeders'
receiver Vince Danielsen, Every Yard Counts. This program allows children in
Calgary and other CFL cities to come see a CFL game in person. Top
2000 - Game 3 - East 23 West 15
2000 saw the closest Snow Bowl game in its short history. The East won
23-15. The Snow Bowl had its first sponsors that year: The Rouge Magazine
and Hooters of Calgary!
The Snow Bowl received its first press coverage in the Calgary Herald! Top
2001 - Game 4 - East 42 West 6
2001 was the greatest Snow Bowl to date. Even though The East grabbed a
quick 36-0 halftime lead, the West played them even for the final half,
graciously giving the East a 42-6 victory!
Sponsorship was the big word in 2001! The Calgary Stampeders, Edmonton
Eskimos, Saskatchewan Roughriders, Winnipeg Blue Bombers and Montreal
Alouettes all donated items for a half-time Snow Bowl draws. The Canadian
Football League donated enough copies of the 2001 CFL Facts, Figures and
Records so that every player could take one home!
We were also fortunate to have more media coverage! An American writer who
played in the Snow Bowl wrote pre-game and post-game articles! The links
worked when this site first went up, but now are gone due to an overhaul at
the source. We are working with Ryan McCarthy, the articles' writer, to get
copies of the articles!
In 2001, the Canadian Football Fan Association agreed to sponsor a Sportsman
of the Game Award! This plaque is known as the SNOWMAN AWARD and is
presented to the player who exemplifies "For the love of the game" by
displaying a combination of fun, sportsmanship, effort and skill. The first
winner was Dean "East Coast Argo Fan" Wood, who is showing off the
plaque on
the Snowman page.
In exchange for this sponsorship, we ask that Snow Bowl players and fans
donate a few dollars to the CFFA's TICKETS FOR KIDS CAMPAIGN. We raised
$180 in
2001 - let's make 2002 a record-breaking year for the kids! Top
2002 - Game 5 - West 27 East 24
The 2002 Snow Bowl saw the game decided on the second last play of the game.
The West responded to a touchdown drive from the East with a touchdown drive
of their own. The 2002 Canadian Football Fan Association Snowman Award
winner, Darwin "Pauz" Gooding was a force, catching four TD passes.
It was another banner year for sponsorship. The CFL donated fact books and
an official 2001 Grey Cup football (won by Tom Higgins from Alabama!). The
Roughriders, Blue Bombers, Lions, Tiger-Cats, Renegades and Eskimos all
donated items that were given away. The Canadian Football Hall of Fame
donated items. The Rouge Magazine returned as a sponsor.
The Snow Bowl raised over $500 for the Canadian Football Fan Association's
Tickets for kids program. This was due to the generous donation of shirts
that were donated by Kopar Administration Limited. Thanks to all those who
bought shirts! Top
2003 - Game 6 - West 35 East 23
The Snow Bowl expanded its media presence this year. The Snow Bowl was
discussed on CBC Radio and also had an article in the Regina Leader-Post
(article to be posted in the near future). Some brief clips from the game
were shown on CTV TV!
The Snow Bowl Trophy had a great time in Regina as it was taken on a tour of
the hospitality suites on Friday and Saturday night! It was actually
recognized by people!
The Snow Bowl Trophy met its first billionaire - Tiger-Cats owner Bob Young!
Unfortunately, the camera battery had died, so no picture could be taken.
When Mr. Young was advised about this, he replied to take a picture of him
off the Internet and Photoshop in the Snow Bowl Trophy. So, here's that
photo! Thanks to Bob Young for his kindness!
The West evened up the overall series at three games apiece, winning their
second straight Snow Bowl! CFFA Snowman Brad "Barney" Frunchak was a
unanimous choice as the CFFA Snowman - his onfield exploits and personal
leadership provided a great example of what the Snowman is about!
2003 was another great year for sponsors! The CFL stepped up again with CFL
Facts, Figures and Records. Donations by the BC Lions, Edmonton Eskimos,
Calgary Stampeders, Winnipeg Blue Bombers and Montreal Alouettes were great
prizes for the post-game draws. Donations from Total-CFL, Argos-Suck.com,
Augusta's Winking Judge, Stick Boy Motorsports and Dr. Hans Viergever of the
Hamilton Tiger-Cats contributed to the fun atmosphere!
In all of the Snow Bowl's travels, it was important to remember the spirit
of the Snow Bowl, which is about playing a game of football for fun and at
no cost to the players.
The Snow Bowl sends its sincere appreciation to Brad Lawryk for making all
of this possible." Jim Wolf.
