Mon Jan 30, 17. Patriots vs Falcons: Who wins this year's Super Bowl?

After 17 gruelling weeks of the regular season and a month of postseason action, all roads lead to the Super Bowl in Houston. The New England Patriots will play the Atlanta Falcons for the Vince Lombardi Trophy after both sides were successful in their respective AFC and NFC Championship encounters.

For the Patriots, this is familiar territory. It is "business as usual", to use an old Bill Belichick saying. New England have reached the showpiece event on seven separate occasions with Belichick at the helm and the four-time winners will be confident of securing a fifth Super Bowl trophy for the franchise.

Tom Brady’s revenge mission is almost complete and the only thing sweeter than beating Atlanta for Super Bowl glory will be watching NFL commissioner Roger Goodell personally hand the Vince Lombardi Trophy over to Brady. It would be fair to state that Goodell isn’t exactly adored at Foxborough after his pivotal role in banning Brady after the "Deflategate" scandal.

New England’s unique system always gives them a favourable chance of victory but Belichick has had to cope without star tight-end Rob Gronkowski for the majority of the year. "Gronk" is on course for the Hall of Fame and the Patriots will be hoping that the likes of Martellus Bennett, Julian Edelman and Chris Hogan, who notched a Patriots postseason record nine receptions for 180 yards and two touchdowns in the win over Pittsburgh, can step up to the plate on the biggest stage of all.

The Falcons are rolling and New England will have to be at their brilliant best on both sides of the ball to stop Matt Ryan and co. With Dan Quinn, now playing in his third Super Bowl in four years, at the helm, the Falcons have the tactical nous to win the NFL’s showpiece event. "Matty Ice" has been simply sublime this year and, while the Vince Lombardi Trophy is the number one objective, the regular season MVP award could be his.
Julio Jones has blossomed into the best receiving option in the National Football League this season and Malcolm Butler will be put to the test if he is given the job of man-marking the Falcons star.

Atlanta, priced at 11/8 in Betway’s NFL markets, will need their studs to be at their best to stand any chance of success. Incredibly, Jones finished with the exact same stat line against Green Bay as Hogan managed for New England but the Falcons man is on another level. If you stop Jones, you have a much better chance of stopping Ryan.

Ultimately, this looks set to be a Super Bowl for the ages; pitting the number one scoring defence against the number one scoring offense. History tells us that defensive stability usually comes out on top but it would be foolish to rule Matt Ryan and the Falcons out. The former Boston College quarterback has plenty of friends in the New England area but business is business and he will be desperate to claim a maiden ring.
