"Hockey, Hockey, Hockey! Is there any other sport that “most” Canadians even care
about? Maybe, maybe not! It’s Sunday April 22 as I write this column and within
a few hours the Calgary Flames who I support will be playing game 6 of the 1st
Round of the NHL Playoffs against the Detroit Red Wings at their “loved” home,
the Pengrowth Saddledome. “Loved” home I say, it seems nearly all of the players
get all messed up when they can’t play at the Saddledome, why is that? Do they
miss their mum’s? I think Jim Playfair should have made them be in bed by 10pm
like little boys, 100% thinking and preparing for the game until they started
winning away from Calgary. As most of us know they had an amazing home record
this year and a horrid away record. Miracles can definitely happen and by the
time you read this the Flames could have won game 6 and then a miracle could
have happened and they won game 7 back in Detroit and the team is still in the
playoffs and attempting to live up to their expectations as they do have a star
studded lineup.
The CDN Cricket team should be proud of their achievement at the World Cup of
Cricket in the West Indies. This week the semi finals start and it’s # 1 ranked
Australia vs #4 ranked South Africa, while #2 ranked the New Zealand Kiwi’s play
#3 ranked Sri Lanka. Australia are the favorites to retain their World Cup title
and of course I hope it happens. Although Canada did not make it to the final 8
teams but they did well in the early matches.
Against New Zealand, Canada scored a very respectable 249 with 9 out off of 49.2
overs. A score of over 200 is considered good in a 50 over 1 Day Cricket match.
If you have not watched this great game you can see Cricket being played at
Riley Park in Kenzington. Too many people in the World Baseball is boring
compared to cricket. I for one can not get excited watching the MLB highlights
of a good baseball outfield catch with a big leather glove on when I watch
cricket and see great diving catches of the very hard cricket ball with bare
hands.
I have talked about Australian Rules Football here in Calgary in previous
articles well seeing that many of you are Hockey Mad you may enjoy this story.
The Canadian guys that have started playing Aussie Rules Footy here with the
Calgary Kangaroos really like our game. Well in late 2006 the guys formed 2 Ice
Hockey teams. As many of the Aussie guys had hardly ever skated before the
Canadian guys from the Calgary Kangaroo’s helped teach the Aussies how to skate
and how to play the game. They played at the Olympic Oval late at night during
the week and both the teams made it to the final of their competition. I went
and filmed the final between the Hockey Roos and the Ice Roo’s. I thought I
would get some funny MYKwebTV but was amazed at how well my mates had picked up
Canada’s game. You can check out this 2 Part 20 minute Hockey MYKwebTV show now
on mykaussie.com which also includes my NHL playoff Hardball style report. Now
it’s our turn to repay the Canadian guys as Aussie Rules Footy has started and
we help the Canadian guys to play our great game. Riley Park Wednesday nights is
the place to be especially this year as we now have 2 teams in Calgary and we
want more Canadians.
Spring is in the air and summer is not far away! I love summers in Canada, they
are short but there is lots of great events to go to all over Canada. There are
also way more beautiful Cwocodiles in Canada in the summers as well as they come
seem to come out of winter hibernation which is a good thing.
See ya later alligators!"
