Former Gawler boy Kym Harrison is making a name for himself in Canada, riding on the crest of the popularity of a home grown product, Australian Rules Football. The hometown footy star is taking AFL to the masses as ‘Myk Aussie’, and has become a household name in parts of Canada.

On his website, ‘Myk’ welcomes users to “the biggest ‘legal’ sports comedy internet TV station in the world!” “I’m the Australian Sports, Comedy, Media guy. I have been based in Western Canada the past nine years, traveling to many sporting events,” the website says. “I’m confident you will enjoy the hours of intense 3-10+ minute sports, comedy TV shows that we have produced and the many sports columns. See you in mates club!”

Born in Gawler, Kym was raised in Roseworthy and played his early football with Hamley Bridge, where he won a junior association medal and captained the Gawler and District mini-league team at SANFL games. Transferring to South Gawler, Kym played in the junior and senior colts, making his A grade debut in 1982. After a stint in Darwin, he joined Flinders Park in the SAFA, where he was recruited to Woodville. From 1988-1990 Kym played six League games, winning the Warriors’ reserves best and fairest in the final year before the club amalgamated with West Torrens. Returning to South Gawler in 1991, he played in the country championships at Football Park before an Adelaide versus Essendon AFL game, and at the end of the season won the Lions’ top award. Under Malcolm McGrath, the local export finally played in a South Gawler premiership in 1992, and after retiring a few years later, sought his fortune elsewhere, moving to Canada and starting his webcast enterprise.

“I mainly reported on the NFL and CFL from 1999 to 2004 with approved media passes, and then in 2005 I started focusing on promoting Canadian and USA Aussie Rules footy,” Kym said. “Aussie Rules has been a bit of a hit over here in Canada, and Toronto has the second largest competition outside of Australia, only London being bigger. We have had some great names from Australia over here who I have interviewed. “Last year it was Dipper and Peter Schwab, and recently we had Kevin Sheedy and Stephen Silvagni over. “Sheedy is a huge advocate of overseas footy, and seeing he’s not coaching he took a trip to the grand final in Toronto, Canada, and then to Louisville, Kentucky to be a guest at the 2007 US nationals – an interview with him is on my website.”

Teams started in the USA 10 years ago and there are now around 60 all over the country. In Western Canada, the Vancouver Cougars were formed in 2000- 01. The following year the Calgary Kangaroos came along, and those sides now have a great rivalry. “We have the largest junior competition outside of Australia, and this year a women’s team was formed in Calgary,” Kym said. “Although most of my time is spent covering as much about football as I can, I still find time to have a kick and a catch myself.” Kym produces sports comedy internet TV shows and writes a weekly Aussie Rules football column, often mentioning his beloved Lions. Also featuring on radio shows in the USA, Kym wears his Lions’ guernsey on “Off The Record,” a popular sports show based out of Toronto, which is shown in prime time nightly all over Canada.
