March 6, 2003, "Moose my Nth American Footy Expert's NFL AAA Europe 2003 Preview"

Scotland Claymores, 9th yr. in the league, All-time record: 36Ws/46Ls - 1w & 1loss in 2 NFL Euro Bowl Championships

Coach: Gene Dahlquist, 3rd season, 6Ws/14losses

QBs: Shane Stafford (Patriots/Ar.FL 2 seasons), James Brown (Scotland,
2nd QB, '02/ 3 yrs. Ar.FL), Dave Priestly (Af2 '02)/{Canadian}

National Players to watch: WR Scott Couper, 8th yr. DL Tom Tovo, 4th yr, DE Robert Flickenger, 6th yr., K Ola Kimrin, 2nd yr.

Outlook '03; Meet the only team in the league that (A) plays the 3-4 defense, (b) could (probably) be home for the Championship & (c) Starts 2 nationals on the defensive front. The Claymores, who've been somewhat disappointing the last 2 seasons, since their last Championship game appearance, ('00), are simply loaded & should go far in the short 10 week season. DL Tom Tovo & Robert Flickinger are two of the best nationals to ever play in NFL E. Flickinger is especially interesting.

He is of an German-Amer. father/Scottish mother & plays in the semi-Pro German football league in the off season. Stafford should be able to hold off Brown @ QB. Brown went 1-0 last yr. as a backup on the 5-5 Claymores. Couper came out of retirement (he was WR coach) because he wants to go out w/ another Championship ring (he was a starter opposite Yo Murphy on the '96 Champ team). There is ample NFL allocated talent as well - the 3rd highest number in the six team league. Prediction: 1st

Frankfurt Galaxy, 11th yr. in the league all time record; 50Ws/53Ls/1T; 2Ws & 2Ls in 4 NFL Euro Bowl Championships

coach: Doug Graber, 3rd season, rec. 10Ws/10Ls

QBs: Kevin Thompson (FA), Quinn Gray (#3 Jacksonville), Wes Pate (#4
Seattle)

National players to watch; Vern Hippler, TE, 10th yr. Pro (7 NFL E, 2 NFL, 1 X-FL), Danny Benetka, DE, 3rd yr. Pro, K Ralf Kleinmann, 6th yr., NFL E's alltime leading scorer, WR Marc Soumah (France), 3dr yr., WR Slawomir Rybarcyzk (Poland), 3rd yr.

Outlook '03; With the best corps ever of National players, several w/ Championship game appearances galore, this team should be on it's way to a league-tying 5th NFL E Bowl appearance. QB Thompson, who was cut loose by Clev.(NFL) several weeks ago when the Browns signed former Winnipeg backup Pat Barnes (who won Frankfurt a Championship several yrs. ago himself). He should have plenty incentive to get back into an NFL camp himself.

This team has more NFL allocated players than any other in the league. Plus Offensive
Coordinator Dwaine Painter, of the Broncos '98 Super Bowl staff seems satisfied w/ the returning talent. Last yr the team called too many time outs, as Painter likes to have a FB on the field @ all times, a rarity in the usual 3-WR sets employed in Europe League. Hippler is the man & last yr. he had too many blocking assignments & played too much FB after former arena leaguer Joey Dosier's injury. He should have had many more than the 4 catches he had.

He was averaging 21 catches a season before he left for the X-FL 2 seasons ago. He is also a 1st rate KS. His former Charger-mate Darren Bennett had a lot of good things to say about him Super Bowl week when Myk & I talked to him. W/ the return of Ralf Kleinmann from a 1 yr. retirement led to the team sending K Ola Kimrin to Scotland. Benetka almost made the Colts 2 yrs. ago & the Patriots last season. He is hungry, too. This team should meet up w/ Scotland in the Championship in Glasgow. Prediction: 2nd.

Rhein Fire, 9th season in the league alltime record: 48 Ws/ 36 Ls; 2Ws & 2 Ls in the NFL E Championship

coach; Pete Kuharcheck, 3rd season, 12 Ws- 9Ls, 0-1 in 1 Championship

QBs: Nick Rolovich (Broncos #3/ Univ. of Hawai'i '02), Chris Griesen (FA),
Mike Watkins (FA)

Outlook '03: The Brian Griese gone in Myk's Denver, the Broncos decided to send Ashley Lelie's Hawai'i mate Rolovich on an NFL sponsored European vacation. Famous sons of NFL Hall-of-Famers Todd Delamiellure (Joe's son) & Luke Butkus (former X-FL #2 man & Bear's LB Dick) are along to help. A few Japanese WRs will be back & just who they are will be determined in training camp in Fla. in the next two weeks. The Fire boast the 2nd most NFL allocated players in the league. Plus they play in a spiffy new domed Stadium. Late Note:

Remeber Manni Burgsmuller, the 53 yr old kicker - he's retired. Rolovich could maek things interesting w/ hated rival Frankfurt if he can find one dependable RB & or WR to be mates w/ like Lelie @ Hawai'i. Don't count out Kuharchek's guys 'cause Pete is a very good defensive coach. If they find an adequate replacement for Burgsmuller, the #2 scorer in NFL E history they may make Glasgow in Jun. yet. Prediction: 3rd.

Berlin Thunder, Euro Bowl Championships 2-0 as Berlin Thunder

coach: Pete Vaas, 4th yr., rec: 18Ws - 14Ls, 2-0 in Championship games

QBs; Henry Burris (#3 Bears/4 yrs. in CFL), Pat Stambaugh (FA/ '01 starter
for Rhein), Zak Kustok (#4 Packers)

National players to watch: K Alex Kruse, WRs Marco Greggerson & Georg
Heckenbach (KS), DB Lelan Brickus

Outlook: w/ the 4th highest number of NFL allocated players it will be difficult for Vaas bunch to win three Championships in-a-row. But after an 0-3 start last yr., they still won it!!! If NFL teams are looking for a good head coach, they ought to check out the guy who coaches the Pro AAA team in Germany's capital city! Pete is just the best coach in this league, hands down. He may not have Cowboy Jack Bicknell's marks yet, but he is the man! Nobody in this league gets more mileage out of his national players then Pistol Pete Vaas, the fastest brain in the NFL E.

Heckenbach is outstanding, as is Kruse. Burris, who is rusty & hasn't had much playing time since Saskatchewan (30 TDs in '00) & will be an improvement over the 2 QB tandom of last season. If they find a good couple of lineman to go w/ their TEs this team could finish higher.
Prediction: 4th.

Amsterdam Admirals, A new team introduced in 1995. 0-2 in 2 NFL Euro Bowl Championship games.

coach: Bart Andrus (Titans assistant last season), 3rd yr. 6 Ws/ 14 Ls

QBs: David Rivers (Falcons #4), Romero Miller (FA), Shaun Hill (#4 Vikings)

Loss: A major blow to the Admirals is the retirement of outstanding Japanese LB Masafumi Kawaguchi, who will be going to camp in the NFL. Myk & I met his Masa-ness in San Diego at Super Bowl & Honolulu for the Pro Bowl, as he attended those games.

Outlook '03; Things don't look much better this yr for Andrus Admirals who may look more like land-lubbers before this season is over. This is the only franchise that has not won the NFL E Bowl yet. They won't win it this year either. They lost to Frankfurt in '95 despite having Darren Bennett on the team &
going 9-1 in the reg. season.

Darren was still miffed about this when Myk & I talked to him during Super Bowl week. The problem is this team usually gets slim picking in the NFL allocation process because of the teams in the NFL it gets players from.

W/ Kawaguchi back there @ LB the last few seasons (He has failed to stick for good in the NFL W/ G.B.-'98,K.C'00 & 49ERS last season, which is probably one reason that Mariucci was fired. That team could have won @ least 2 more games because if everybody on any team would play as hard as Masa does, it would spread to all teammates). One guy who could come close to replacing Masa would be ex-B.C. Lion Rookie of the yr./X-FL & aR.FL guy Paul Lacoste, who can play either LB or S. But they should @ least finish ahead of Barcelona. Prediction: 5th.

Moose & his NFL Europe Japanese mate Masa Kawaguchi at the 2003 NL Pro Bowl in Hawaii. Masa is a huge star in Japan.

Barcelona Dragons, 11th yr. in the league, all time record: 59Ws-44Ls, 2 Ws & 3Ls in NFLE Championship

coach: 'Cowboy' Jack Bicknell, 11th season, 59Ws-44Ls, 2Ws, 3Ls in NFL E
Championship games

QBs: Seth Burford (#3 Chargers), Josh Huepel (FA), Chris Finlin (FA)

National players to watch: WRs Marco Martos & Carlos Rosado (Mexico),
Samir Hamoudi CB (Iran)

Outlook '03; I could stop right here @ say not good, but I guess some explicatory commentary would be apprapou (sp?). Bicknell has had a storied career. Boston College all time winning coach, Doug Flutie's mentor in school, No other coach to get to 5 NFL E Championships in 10
yrs., etc.

But why would Jack hang around to watch his all time NFL E mark plummet toward .500? This is an awful team & getting worse all the time. Believe me I know. Remember my favorite NBA is L.A.'s Clippers, who I dearly love, even though they have the 5th lowest winning % of NBA team histori(es).

Start w/ a nobody-nothing QB, Burford, who had no business making the Chargers last yr over former Grey Cup/CFL MVP Dave 'Mad Dog' Dickenson & you get the picture. If this team can somehow win as many as last season's 2 games Bick should be named coach-of-the-yr right there! There simply is no talent here except for Mexico's fine WR pair Carlos Rosado & Marco Martos, who is in his 9th season & still has 4.4 speed. He had try-outs once upon a time w/ both the Broncos & Cowboys but neither of them was that good then. No matter how much Marty Schottenheimer thinks his coddling & Jack Bicknell's coaching will help Burford, I doubt anything can make him a Pro QB. Maybe they can use him in arenafootball2 or the NIFL(AA). Prediction 6TH, Last place.

"Great report Moose. Hopefully we will be in Scotland for this years Euro Bowl." Myk Aussie
