Trying to recruit players for the OAFL Ottawa Swans on my recent trip to South Australia!

I recently had a great trip to South Australia. Talking Australian Rules Football is always one of the main topics when I'm out with mates back home. On this great day at the Mallala pub with my brother I caught up with Craig Argent a longtime mate from the South Gawler Lions, my home team in South Australia. Arge now a Mallala Magpie "Off the field Legend" was telling me how his lad is currently in Whistler Canada working and snowboarding. So after I was telling him about the Ottawa Swans and the OAFL, hopefully Arge's lad comes out to the East of Canada once the snowboarding season has finished and plays for the Ottawa Swans in 2012. The Mallala Magpies are a very successful club in the Adelaide Plains Football League.

While I had Arge in a deserved headlock I told him not to diss my Aussie hat as 99% of Canadians and USA people luv it and that I don't care what Aussies think.

While in South Australia I also found another possible Ottawa Swans player for 2012.

From Sat Oct 1. Geelong Cats defeat Collingwood Magpies in a great Grand Final!

What a great AFL Grand Final it was. There were many lead changes. It was only in the last 15 minutes that the Cats won the game. Final score, Geelong Cats 18-11=119 to Collingwood Magpies 12-9=81.

It was a fantastic night at the Ottawa Swans AFL Party at the Georgetown Pub watching the game and chatting with Swans players and other AFL fans. Then today on TSN I got to watch the game again at 12 noon. Fantatsic promotion for the game with TSN showing it today all across Canada." Myk Aussie

What a rippa of a AFL Grand Final it should be. On SportsInteraction.com the Cats are now favored by -3.5 points. Talking with Keggan Haggison tonight he says Magpies were favored by the bookies in Australia earlier in the week. He also says it could be wet weather in Melbourne.

In dry or wet weather Keggan thinks it will be a tight lowish scoring game. His heart says the Cats but his head says the Magpies. The Cats were Keggans AFL team before the Adelaide Crows entered the competition thus he is still a fan of the Cats.

Well I'm going for the Cats and against the spread as well. I also like them but more importantly I'm not a fan of the Collingwood Magpies. I'm hoping they will again be the Colliewobbles.

AFL Finals picks, week 3! Picks against the spread! Magpies vs Hawks shown at 2pm Fri EST on TSN2 in Canada!

I'm going for Collingwood Magpies over Hawthorn Hawks. On SportsInteraction.com the spread is -23.5 to the Magpies. Keggan Haggison in South Australia says Magpies by 15.

In the other final I'm going for Geelong Cats over West Coast Eagles. The spread is -26.5 to the Cats. Keggan says Cats by 25.

Damn I think its tough betting on AFL. In last weeks great game Eagles vs Blues with 5+ minutes to go the Eagles were up by 15 points and I had money on them at -14.5. They won by 3 points in a great game. I think Morency also had money on the Eagles as a result of my segment on his show from Friday night. Refer below.

I'm going for the Hawthorn Hawks to defeat the Sydney Swans. Kegan Haggison, my AFL advisor in South Australia says Hawks to win by 15 points. The spread on SportsInteraction.com is 12.5 to the Hawks.

Seeing that the game is in Perth, I'm going for the West Coast Eagles to defeat the Carlton Blues. Kegan says Eagles by 35 points. The spread on SportsInteraction.com is 14.5 points to the Eagles.

2011 AFL Finals are set! Picks against the spreads!

On Friday Sept 9, 3rd placed Hawthorn Hawks take on 2nd placed Geelong Cats at the MCG in the 2nd Qualifying Final. Cats to win and cover the spread of 5.5 points.

On Saturday Sept 10, 4th placed West Coast Eagles take on 1st placed Collingwood Magpies. The Eagles smashed the Crows last night. Morency has a liking for the Eagles seeing they won him money 2 weeks ago. Collingwood is my pick to win especially seein the game is in Melbourne and also to cover the spread of 29.5 points.

Also on Saturday 6th placed Saint Kilda Saints take on 7th placed Sydney Swans in the 2nd Elimination Final in Melbourne at the Etihad Stadium. With my 2010 and 2011 involvement with the Ottawa Swans I'll be hoping the Swans win this game. A few experts in Australia have picked the Swans but I'm going for the Saints to win but not to cover the spread of 17.5 points.

On Sunday Sept 11, 8th placed Essendon Bombers take on 5th placed Carlton Blues also at the MCG in Melbourne. I'll be hoping the mighty Essendon Bombers win this game. But I'm going for the Blues to win but not to cover the spread of 18.5 points.

I made the phone call to AFL Guru Kegan Haggison tonight to get his opinion on the AFL Finals week 1 and margins. I think Kegan was avoiding my phone calls this week seeing it was the last minor round of the AFL season. Some teams were resting players and there was no real relevance on many of the games thus I belive he didn't want to give his picks and margins. Fair enough! Would have been silly to bet on this weeks AFL games.

From Tues Aug 30. Wow! BL&GFA South Australian country, Barossa District lost Saturday’s Elimination First-Semi Final to Willaston as they had a extra player on the field!

This is quite the story from my home league the Barossa Light and Gawler Football Association in South Australia. Barossa District had 1 extra player thus 19 players on the field at the start of the 4th quarter. Willaston called for a count and thus Barossa District lost their entire score and ultimately the match! Wow!

I believe some Sports fans in CDN and USA will be shocked at this. They may think it is "unsportsmanlike". It is the rule.

Also I get so annoyed when "some" coaches in the NFL and NBA complain when a team "runs up the score" as they say. To a Aussie that is a disgraceful complaint. You win and then bury a team at all chances. No holding back. Also many players on a Aussie Rules Football team are aiming for best players that day playing a team game and others are determined to hold onto their place in the side thus no letting up at all right to the final siren.

OAFL Hamilton Wildcats 12-15=87 defeat Ottawa Swans 8-6-54 in the final regular season game!

It was another good effort by the Swans as the Wildcats are 2nd on the OAFL Ladder. The Swans finish the season with 3 wins. A great improvement from last year. The team was competitive many weeks against some of the top teams. For the report on OttawaSwans.com

BL&GFA, South Gawler Lions Under 15's defeat Tanunda Magpies in the 1st Semi Final!

Part of a report from Matthew Symes of the Lions. "With just the one team playing last Saturday our club was proud to see the Junior Colts win their First Semi Final against Tanunda.  It was the first time this season we’ve beaten the Magpies. The timing of our team and its first-year coaches Luke Officer and Sam Montgomerie could not have been better. After being down by two goals at the main break and then four points at three quarter time, our boys produced a mighty effort to win by ten points. 

Best on the day were Jack Millar, Brad Dankiewicz and Tyson Pantagiotou. Offy mentioned after the match that he was proud of his boys’ efforts to be within one win of the grand final after the challenges faced before this season even began.  He is determined that the Under 15 lads both enjoy their win, but at the same time remain disciplined and not become complacent." Matthew Symes

OAFL, Ottawa Swans 13-8 = 86 have a great 36 point win over the Broadview Hawks 8-2 = 50 in Toronto! Hamilton Wildcats come to Ottawa this Saturday for the last regular season game of the year!

There has been great improvemet this year by many of the Canadians on the Swans team along with the addition of some key Aussies. Centreman Daren Roffey the 2010 Swans Best and Fairest winner from South Australia has had another great year. Many weeks the Swans still don't play with the allowed 6 Australians on the field. This Saturday the 2nd placed Hamilton Wildcats come to Ottawa to take on the Swans. The Swans will be very keen to finish off the year with a win while the Wildcats will be trying to continue their great form as they prepare for the OAFL finals. On a very hot windy day in Ottaw the 2nd placed Demons were to good for the Swans. Hayden Walters from Ballarat Victoria up forward for the Demons was brilliant kicking 8 goals. Best players for the Swans; Darren Roffey, Chris Lockhart, Jay Goldhawk, Dave Martin, Will from Quebec Saints, Chris Peck.

This is fantastic that Rogers TV are today showing the game to the massive Toronto and area sports market. Toronto Rebels player Mike Coll and Willy Jong the Supervising Producer at Rogers TV in Toronto made this happen ASAP.

On Friday I ran into a Ottawa Cwoc (CWOC Cool Women Of Canada) lady friend. She was excited to tell me that on Thursday night she was flicking through the channels on her TV and was amazed/excited to see me interviewing James Maitland as part of the pre game show. Rogers TV in Ottawa replaying the game again on Thursday night was more great exposure for the Ottawa Swans and the OAFL Ontario Australian Football League.

From Sun June 12. Rogers TV Ch22 in Ottawa filmed the Ottawa Swans vs Toronto Rebels game on Saturday June 11 at Rideau Carleton Raceway. It was a 1st in Canada. The game was shown at 4.30pm and midnight on Sunday and on Rogers Ch22 in Ottawa!

From Thurs June 9. Rogers TV Ch22 in Ottawa are filming the Ottawa Swans vs Toronto Rebels game this Saturday, 2pm at Rideau Carleton Raceway! A 1st in Canada! MYKwebTV shows from 2010 Ottawa Swans vs High Park Demons!

This is great news and a 1st in Canada, a cable TV station filming a full Australian Rules Football game to be shown on Cable TV in Canada. I'm looking forward to hosting and commentating while James Maitland the currently injured Ottawa Swan and 2011 Canadian Northwind player will be cohosting and the color commentator.

On Tuesday night while the Swans were training we met with Alain Ouellette the Producer from Rogers TV. I am very impressed in what Rogers TV will be doing on Saturday. There will be up to 8 cameras filming the game and the footage will be edited Live. We will be doing a 5+ minute pregame show talking about the OAFL standings, the Ottawa Swans and Toronto Rebels season to date, how the teams will line up and talking about players to watch from each team. At 1/2 time and after the game we we will be conducting coach and player interviews.

Some Swans guys have worked hard to make this happen. The game will be shown on Rogers TV Ch 22 in Ottawa on a Sunday at 4.30pm within 1-2 weeks and then replayed several times during that week. Talking with Alain last night there is also a possibility Rogers TV in Toronto will also show the game. That would be huge for the OAFL. For more details check out the report on OttawaSwans.com

AFL Sydney Swan Champ Brett Kirk will be in Toronto this Saturday at the OAFL games and to promote the 2011 Intl Cup!

Talking with Bill Conroy the OAFL Secretary on Saturday, he was telling me how Brett will be playing a Div 2 game for the Etobicoke Roos at 10am Saturday at the Humber South oval in Toronto, then coaching a womens game and then umpiring a OAFL game. He will also be here to promote the 2011 International Cup and to help the Canadian Northwind team.

OAFL Rd 3 Etobicoke Roos 17-19 = 121 defeat Ottawa Swans 0-4 = 4! OAFL Rd 3 results!

The Swans started well. They were very determined and at 1/4 time the score was Roos 1-2 = 8 to Swans 0-3 = 3. During the 2nd quarter the Roos really started to show their skill and teamwork. At 1/2 time the score was Roo's 6-4 = 40 to Swans 0-3 = 3. The 2nd 1/2 was all Roos and they ran out winning by a big margin. The Roos Australian players led by Travis McKenzie are possibily the best group that I have seen in the OAFL including 2010 and to date in 2011. They named the following Best Players; D Allen, T McKenzie, C Haesler, J Harris, A Jacobs, A Patterson.

The Swans lost bigman James Maitland during the 2nd quarter with a possible serious ankle injury. Hopefully he will be OK for the 2011 International Cup in August. Best for the Swans I thought were Adam Nash, Luke Walsh, Yaser Abou Elenein, Blake Hurley, Thomas Delany, Chris Lockhart. For a more detailed report on OttawaSwans.com

I'm looking forward to watching the Ottawa Swans vs Etobicoke Roos game on Saturday in Ottawa. The Swans have improved this season with quite a few much needed new players including several Aussies. I'm hoping the Swans can really take it to the Roo's like they did last year but the Roo's look like they may be the team to beat this year.

I believe Swans Legend Luke Walsh will be playing his 1st game for the Swans this season as he recently returned from a trip to Australia. Can Walshy's presence inspire the Swans to their 1st win of the season. Who will the Swans put on 2010 OAFL Best and Fairest winner Travis McKenzie the big Aussie Roo's forward. It was a great effort by the Swans on Saturday against the Toronto Eagles. With 10 min's to go the Swans were within 14 points of the Eagles. Final score was Eagles 10-5 = 65 to Swans 5-8 = 38. Updated Mon May 16. Ooch! Cwoc's (Cool Women Of Canada) are allowed to play in Div 1 of the OAFL Ontario Australian Football League, Eastern Canada!

I have been a huge advocate/Calgary Kookaburras sponsor/web sportscaster of Womens footy in CDN and USA/talked on radio and TV of Womens Aussie Rules Footy in CDN and the USA. After some initial concerns that Aussie Rules Footy would be possibily viewed as a "girls/soft" game if CDN Womens Aussie Footy was formed in Calgary, I thought, No its mainly a good thing! Aussie Rules Footy is a tough/hard/at time dangerous game and I admire every Canadian guy or women that takes the field!

However I feel very strongly that women should not be allowed to play in Div 1 of the OAFL. There is a Div 2 with 6 teams, women are allowed to play in Div 2 until a Ontario Womens league is formed. I know many agree with me, maybe many disagree with me as well. After some confusion, I found out that there has been several games over the past few years when a women has played in the OAFL Div 1. In the OAFL Rd 1 last week the High Park Demons played a women against the Ottawa Swans.

Talking with many players, some OAFL official people and others over the weekend I believe "most/90% maybe" agree that women should not be playing in Div 1. I also need to clarify that when I was younger there was a belief cancer could come years later as a result of hits, bruising, blood clots etc. The womens breast area is a very delicate area, breast cancer is always in the news thus my real concern with women being hit in this area. Does anyone know what causes cancer? Stress can I believe. Maybe these days I can understand some people ripping into me about my statement saying hits possibily causing cancer but 30+ years ago when I was younger I grew up thinking differently by what was said at the time.

One guy I was talking that did not want to tackle the women in Rd 1 even suggested the Demons played a women to get a advantage knowing the guys would take it easy on her. That was one of my thoughts as well so it was good to hear that from a player. I don't believe this was the coaches thinking but it is a interesting concept if the women is a good player.

There is definite confusion still as to when this rule was made, when it was agreed upon, if in fact it was agreed upon by the voting people. Reading the discussion someone replied saying the rules has been in effect for several years but I was told officially over the weekend that 2 years ago it was not a rule. A mess yes, a interesting topic, definitly.

From Thurs Feb 24. Greg Everett is no longer Vice President of AFL Canada!

Greg has been heavily involved with Northwind the Canadian team and the OAFL, Ontario League for many years. I've known Greg since 2000 when I stayed at his house in Toronto. My mate Drew Haines from Gawler South Lions was living at Greg's and playing for the Toronto Eagles. I appreciated the bed at Gregs, we talked lots of footy. It was at this same time that I was lucky enough to be on TSN's Off The Record wearing my South Gawler Lions jersey.

I saw him having a kick last year for the Etobicoke Roo's in Division 2 along with doing lots of the work setting up at the 49th Parrallel Cup, which was the USA vs CDN games. I'm sure I will see Greg at the OAFL games this year.

The Toronto Downtown Dingos appoint Chris 'Butch' Buczkowski as head coach. Chris is the 1st Canadian coach ever at the Dingos. For the report on oafl.ca Click here

With the regular minus 10-20 celcius temperatures upon us at this time of the year here in Ottawa, this is a great new competition. For the details Click here

OAFL Ontario Canada, Indoor Junior and Recruiting development sessions in Toronto!

Also in Toronto with the regular minus 10-20 celcius temperatures, this is excellent news just in from Martin Walter, President of the OAFL.

"I have personally (not the OAFL) paid for a number of one hour sessions at the UCC Bubble starting this Sunday at  9.15 am and every Sunday thereafter until March 6th.

Please, I encourage you all clubs to use this facility and to bring down and encourage any new recruits or juniors that you are working on or that you may find over this next 6 to seven week period.

Personally, I will have a bunch of our Demons there every week but don’t let that scare you off. So someone from the OAFL or the Demons FC (Ashley Martin) will most likely be taking training and of course  there will be separate sessions for new players.  So please use the facility to help your club recruit." Martin Walter, President OAFL.

These sessions are on Sundays starting today Jan 23 at the William P. Wilder Arena and Sports Complex at 200 Lonsdale Rd, Toronto. These sessions run through until Mar 6th. If you have any queries email me myk@mykaussie.com and I can get you in touch with Martin Walter.

I know he's going to be there to play as the overrated Cowboys can't make the Super Bowl. The Pro Bowl is now played the week before the Super Bowl thus Super Bowl players don't go to Hawaii for the Pro Bowl. Making the Pro Bowl is huge for NFL players, great for their sucess and image as a player and very good for their current and or future NFL contracts.
