AFL week 8 tips!
Are you a betting person, my AFL tips with advise from Kev in South Australia!
For my/Kev's AFL week 8 tips check out the Mates Column in the now 100% Free Mates Club Click here

Last year with some advise from Kev in South Australia I/we came 110 out of 207,431 on the afl.com.au tipping. We had a average Rd 7 tipping 5 out of 8. We are now on 42, 3 behind the leaders Mr BC Footy Stuart Grills and Phantom in the Vancouver Cougars/Burnaby Eagles footytips.com.au competition.

The Ottawa Swans get a nice welcome in their 1st ever game in the OAFL, Ontario Australian Football League in Canada!
On Saturday the Ottawa Swans played their 1st ever official game in the OAFL. After forming the club in 07 and playing some games against teams in and around Toronto the Swans were this year accepted into the OAFL which is one of the largest competitions outside of Australia. In the OAFL only 6 Australians are allowed on the field at any one time which is less than in most leagues outside of Australia where it is 50-50 thus 9 Australians and 9 non Australians on the field at once.

In their 1st game on Saturday the score was Etobicoke Kangaroos 21.12 = 138 to the Ottawa Swans 5.4 = 34. My Swans mate Spud said today "We definitely played better than the score says. It was a tough game and they are pretty sore I would say. We should push a few teams this year."

Spud could well be right there as the
Etobicoke Kangaroos finished minor premiers in 07 but were beaten in the Grand Final by the Toronto Eagles. For the Ottawa Swans site Click here

Victoria 21.11 = 137 defeat the Dream Team 18.12 = 120  in a 150 Year Celebration Match!

BL&GFA, South Australian footy. The Gawler Centrals Tigers defeat the South Gawler Lions at Elizabeth Oval!
Ooch! The final score was Central 22.8 = 140 defeated South 11.7 = 73. This game was played at Elizabeth Oval as a pre game to the SANFL Central Districts vs Woodville West Torrens Eagles league match.

South Gawler Football Club – In the Lions Den from President Percey.
Congratulations to the Sterling Homes Under 15s and G Trak Reserves who were the only successful South Gawler footballers last week end. Special congratulations to Simon Heads Heroes in the Reserves who fought their way to a character filled win. Congratulations to Josh Vermeeren who made his long awaited A Grade debut last week end and was amongst the best players – Josh is a very exciting prospect. Congratulations to Gawler Centrals A grade who regained the “Tom Symes’ Cup fairly and squarely. Thanks to Central Districts for hosting the Denron Metal Lions at their oval – despite the loss it was a memorable experience.

This week the Lions host Kapunda at home in all grades. The assistance of volunteers is requested to make the day a success which starts at 8.30am when the Under 13s kick off. The Players Auction of A grade footballers and netballers will be held this Saturday night – it’s a great chance to make some easy money and support our club.

Make a date for May 31 for Junior night at the Den when the club opens its doors to the most enthusiastic Lions of all. The following day is ‘Retro Sunday’ hosted by Garry Hurst and the Life Members. The classic days of the old Den by the river will be recreated and a fun time is guaranteed. Have you seen the new ‘Blue and White’ Rag – it is fantastic so please give the new ‘Eddy Tor’ Kellie Harriss a big pat on the back for her voluntary work.

This week the A grade in particular face a real test. They have come forward in many ways this year and all young teams have their ups and downs. How will the players respond? What they do need is the support of all Lions – please make the effort to get to the Den this weekend and to support loudly, positively and proudly. Go the Lions!" President Percey

The 08 Canadian Kelowna Cup is June 7!
This event is not far away and the Calgary Kangaroos and Bears are now full into training for this event and also the Roos vs Bears games starting on May 24. Outdoor training only started here in Calgary a few weeks ago due to crazy weather this time of year. The BC Footy guys have already played several games and no doubt will be taking a strong line up to Kelowna. This event is unique in the fact that we split into Alberta Canadian/Non Aussies vs British Columbia Canadians/Non Aussies and then Alberta Aussies vs British Columbia Aussies.   vs

NWPAFL, North West Pacific AFL, Western Canada. The West Coast Saints 8.9 = 57  defeated the Burnaby Eagles 2.4 = 16. A detailed match report from The Whisper!
After what can only be described as the most unprecedented weather the lower mainland has seen for decades the sun emerged from behind the clouds and melted the snow that early morning blanketed the UBC Sports fields!  The crowd were gathering and although waiting for a weather delayed start endured the relatively frigid temperature. 2.30pm April 19th witnessed the third round of the NWPAFL Season. With the Saints relishing the top position on the ladder and the Eagles desperate to climb out of the bottom rung the game was certain to be a ripper.

The first quarter started in true west coast style - umpire Brian Horan electing to throw the ball skyward to avoid the wet and slippery ground. Immediately Dale Handley and the Eagles centre players demonstrated that they were ready to play footy!  However, Saints Mike Lancaster and Craig Hopkins quickly started to gain possessions throughout the midfield thwarting the Eagles surges forward.  At the 5 minute mark the ball was deep in the  Saints forward line and silky skilled Craig hopkins snapped for a major. The rest of the quarter was deadlocked with the Eagles veteran Peter Taylor showing he was well rested during the preseason. Taylor finished the quarter with 7 kicks, 4 Handballs and 3 Marks - setting the stage for a possible BOG performance. Late in the quarter Mike Lancaster kicked the second goal for the Saints from just on 50m and Saint's newbie Lachlan "Locky" Scott snagged a great goal less than 2 minutes later. Brad Teasdale was having a great game throughout the middle and was ably assisted by the veteran Bonney across the back line!

Q1   Saints 3.2 = 20   v  Eagles 0.1 = 1

Kicking with the wind in the second quarter the Eagles had many more attacking opportunities, but players such as Ward Frost and Ryan McGrath for the Saints showed some amazing form across the half and full back lines. Clayton Holmes had a spectacular second quarter proving that his inclusion in the Canadian Northwind contingent will be fruitful!  Big hits were a major component of this battle with the Eagles' Plugger the recipient of a great hip and shoulder. This was followed by Peter Taylor's bone crunching hip and shoulder on Gareth "Chip" Bowley. As Chip ran forward toward the "Mahony and Sons Wing" Taylor executed the best body check to be witnessed this season.  A more perfect hit could not have been delivered and true to Taylor's sportsmanlike approach was completely within the bounds of the rules. Credit to Bowley for bouncing back up and staying in the game!  The quarter was a war of attrition with both sides unable to register a major score till well into the 18 minute mark when lofty Ryan Martin snagged a wonderful goal for the Saints. Under Saint coach Scott Sheen's skilful tutelage the Saints were able to completely nullify many skilful Eagles players including Adam Cole who remained without a kick for the quarter until the dying minutes.  Cole received a great forward delivery and received the kick 30 meters out from goal.  It has to be said the conditions were paying the toll and kicking a very water soaked ball Cole missed.  Had he scored a major the quarter would have been a wash on the score board.

Q2   Saints 4.3 = 27  v Eagles 0.3 = 3

The wind was still playing a role in the third quarter and the Saints had a definitive breeze advantage early on. It only took 3 minutes for the ball to be locked in the Saints forward pocket. David Miller performed a mesmerizing arc and snapped to Matt "Ringadingding" Sutherland who marked and goaled. But the Eagles were inspired by their leadership group and forced the ball northward time and again. Frustrating the Saints defense paid off when Eagle Randy Dicken marked and then was awarded a 50m penalty in the pocket.  Kicking truly Randy scored the BAFC's first goal of the game. The centre bounce was hard fought with the Saints rock Ward Frost battling for the ball. The free ball was corralled in centre field before a break out play allowed speedy Mike Lancaster to snap a great goal!  Not to be outdone in the seesaw 3rd quarter the Eagles pushed forward through Adam Cole who kicked long to goal on the 12 minute mark. Unfortunately for the game tensions rose and the game became tangled in a messy melee. Players from both teams lost their cool and composure and Umpires Horan and Stratford were forced to yellow card.  Lancaster (WCSAFC) and Roger (BAFC) were ejected before a frustrated Dale Wakefield (BAFC) was also carded for unduly rough play.  Credit to the umpires for restoring professionalism to the game and after a short delay a ball up ensued!  Late in the quarter Chip Bowley kicked the WCSAFC final goal of the quarter.

Q3   Saints 7.5 = 47  v Eagles 2.3 = 15

The final quarter witnessed the traditional calm that the UBC field often effects late in the afternoon. With the wind non existent and the ground considerably dryer the speed of the game was more pronounced. Big Saint forward Matt Sutherland marked truly in the forward line after receiving a long bomb from James Maitland. He quickly passed to Lachlan Scott who set up and missed. The Saints peppered the goals throughout the final term with little success. The Eagles also found it hard to goal as Adam Cole again missed an opportunity from inside 50m. While the game result was perhaps out of contention the standard of play was not waning. Both teams battled hard throughout the last quarter and it was not till the 18 minute mark that speedy Peter Campion was able to receive a running pass, mark and proceed to power toward goal and shoot successfully!

Final score; Saints 8.9 = 57  defeating the Eagles 2.4 = 16.

Goals;
Saints - Lancaster 2, Bowley 1, Campion 1, Hopkins 1, Martin 1, Scott 1, Sutherland 1

Eagles - Cole 1, Dicken 1

Best; Saints - from Frost, Maitland, Holmes, Lancaster, Hopkins, McGrath, Teasdale

Umpires - Brian Horan, Jason Stratford
Conditions - wet and cold to start, finishing with a pretty nice afternoon!" From The Whisper!

BL&GFA, Barossa Light and Gawler Football Association in South Australia. South Gawler Football Club, Part of this weeks In the Lions Den
 from President Percey!
As always any game against Willaston was very willing and competitive and last Saturdays trial match was no exception. It is hard to tell what you can take out of the trial with both clubs experimenting and resting players. The Lions can be happy that they won all games against the Donnybrooks with the A grade showing pleasing character. Hopefully they can continue it into the season which starts for the Lions in round two against Barossa District at Lyndoch. What an excellent challenge for the A grade and it is hoped that they are well supported by the South Gawler faithful.

With the first time bye ( for the first time ever) all Lions are invited to the Den this Friday to watch the senior squad including the Under 17s train. This will be followed by a BBQ tea then a motivational lecture by Alan Stewart and Steven Schwerdt of the Adelaide Crows. South Gawler Supporters of all ages are encouraged to attend to enjoy what should be a interesting night.

This Saturday why not come to the Den where Willaston and Kapunda will be playing both football and netball. The Lions are pleased to help out and hope both clubs have a good day.

The Under 11 and Under 13 teams are now training on Thursdays from 4pm at the Den – everyone is welcome so spread the word at school and beyond.
 ‘Go the Lions’!" President Percey.

Vancouver Cougars   vs   Burnaby Eagles

BC Canadian Footy the Vancouver Cougars 11.11 = 77 hammer the Burnaby Eagles 2.6 6= 18! A excellent match report from the VAFC Committee.

"Vancouver Cougars Goal Scorers; Brad Jorgensen 3, Stuart Grills 2, Tim Cipolloni 2, Kevin Tolme 1, Matt Harrison 1, Jordan Milne 1, Brian Kelly 1.
Vancouver Cougars Best; from; James Warfe, Matt Dube, Tim Cipolloni, Brenton Short, Brian Kelly, Brad Jorgensen, Jay Abbott

After receiving a narrow loss to the West Coast Saints last round the Vancouver Australian Football Team overcame all obstacles today to run out clear victors against the Burnaby Eagles.  Final score 11.11.77 VAFC defeating 2.6.18 BAFC

Playing at the new ground location of Newton, Surrey under overcast conditions rookie first year Coach Brad Jorgensen mustered up some coaching finesse to make sure the entire Cougar player group welded together and played at their true potential.  Brian Kelly, Brad Jorgensen and Jay Abbott started on the ball and immediately developed a strong attacking force.  With Ryan Carrucan and Hurley attacking off the half forward line and Sam Stevens shifted to Full Forward the Cougars looked strong in attack - albeit a little off target!  The first quarter was a close encounter with the Eagles keen to thwart any Cougar momentum.  Brenton Short and Ashley Steier combined well across  half back limiting the Eagles chances.  At the close of the first quarter VAFC 3.3.21 to BAFC 2.0.12.

A quarter time analysis of the Cougars strengths/weaknesses witnessed a change of Grills to CHF and Edmonds to FF. Dusty Castallerin and Chris Harrison battled hard at the ball and backline veteran Tony Cooper helped curb Eagles attacks. ISSC import Wayne Murray proved his Gaelic skills ably assisted his efforts on the footy field.  Kevin Tolme, Jordan Milne and Matt Payne also threw their bodies on the line throughout the entire game.  Jay Abbott was unstoppable and enjoyed the dryer conditions attempting several spectacular marks.  However it was the leadership from the enthusiastic James Warfe (Game day Captain) that really set the tone of the game for the Cougars - playing across the half back line Warfe repelled many Eagles kicks and rebounded the ball with real consistency and vigor.  Kicking into a slight head wind the Cougars closed the half 5.6.36 to BAFC 2.1.12.

The half time change witnessed a slight resurgence from the Eagles but once again the Cougars freshman brigade took up the challenge.  Playing disciplined footy Matt Dube, Tim Cipolloni, Jack Tse, Jack Thompson and Les Ketchell showed that they could handle the increased pressure!  Matt Harrison snagged a brilliant goal from 40 metres adding to the VAFC lead.  Kevin Tolme was regaining his skills/experience after being away from the game for many years!  Three quarter time 8.8.56 VAFC to 2.4.16 BAFC.

The conditions late in the game provided little favor for either end. The Cougars kicking into what was a head wind now had an opportunity to showcase their game fitness.  While the Eagles never said die it became apparent that the long game was taking its toll.  Frank Murphy and Rory O'Maley worked hard to win the ball and Brian Kelly continued his domination of the ruck contests.  Brad Jorgensen turned up his work rate and snagged a nice goal.  Frustration for the Eagles surrounded the smaller Cougar running players.  Robert Edmonds provided a solid target up forward - beaming with pride when assisting his team mates.  Liam Dib and Clayton Lund also contributed well interchanging from the sidelines.  But overall it was an excellent team effort from the Cougars which helped them secure a final score of 11.11.77 defeating the Eagles 2.6.18.

A special word of thanks goes out to the spectators that came out to offer support. There were many WC Saints players on hand to help with water, being runners, and simply encouraging the players and that was truly a great thing! The stage is set for a great third game for the NWPAFL season as the Cougars sit lofty atop the ladder with a notable percentage.  All players should be proud of the way the team developed and the spirit in which they played the game.

The Cougars headed back to the Eagles main sponsor the Hop and Vine Pub and enjoyed some great food, cold drinks and many stories! Next Game - Burnaby Eagles versus West Coast Saints!  Stay tuned!!

Canadian Northwind forward Scott Fleming playing in Queensland.
This report from Scott came to me earlirt this week via the Vancouver Cougars. Scott is playing this year in Queensland to improve his footy in readiness for the International Cup of Australian Rules Football in Melbourne in August. Scott is a current member of the Canadian Northwind team

"I traveled to Brisbane on Saturday and played my first game for the reserve team against a team called Zillmere. Unfortunately I woke up that morning not feeling very good at all, I think it was a little to do with nerves and just not feeling good. We got beat pretty bad and finished the game two men short due to injuries. I played the whole game and played a bunch of different positions. I started out at centre-half back, moved in to the ruck in the second quarter and finished the game at centre half forward. I had a few good marks and my kicking was pretty good but I missed my one attempt on goal. The senior team played right after us and were leading up until the last ten minutes when they gave up a couple of goals to lose by a couple of points. I told the coach after the game that I had been under the weather since the night before, he thought I did fairly well for my first game and for not feeling well.

This week we are training on Tuesday and Thursday nights and I got in a weight workout today, Wednesday. I have another game with the reserves on Saturday at Broadbeach. I know I will play better now that the first game jitters are gone and I am feeling 100%. Next week, between the U-18's and the senior team I will have four hard training sessions from Monday to Thursday nights. The regular season starts in two weeks and the coaches are pushing hard so we are ready to go. Broadbeach just paid $2,000 dollars for a player from Southport. He was a state U-18 player a couple of years ago and played in the senior Grand Final last year for Southport. I was talking to one of our senior team members who is an ex AFL player with Adelaide. He gets a $1,000 per game to play for Broadbeach. He is the  highest paid player in the Queensland AFL." Scott
