Preseason report from Canton, Ohio home of the NFL Hall of Fame!
End of an Era with New England's release of P/H

Moose Salzer
"When New
England's Patriots recently released P/H Josh Miller (left-footed,
right-handed holder) it marked the sad end of an era. There are now
officially no more ex-Baltimore Stallions left in Pro Football.
Demetrius Maxie is also gone as a CFL DLm. Miller, who played 14-years in
the Pro, started with two years as P of the Baltimore CFL's, who became
the Stallions in the magical Grey Cup winning season of 1995. He then
signed with the hometown Pittsburgh Steelers, but later won a Super Bowl
with the Patriots. Miller, spent 12 seasons in the NFL and two in the CFL
and was one of the best left-footed punters ever. Goodbye Josh and now
it's time to Teach with Ken Saroka in that h.s. you attended, where he
teaches. A was a very good run!
So far the Houston Texans
of Gary Kubiak are looking like the smartest team in the NFL for getting
QB-stud Matt Schaub away from the slumping NFC South Division Falcons.
Schaub could have been a great bailout plan for the Falcons as #1 (for
the moment) QB Mike Vick faces dog killing/fighting charges which will
probably land him in jail for six months to a year and the Falcons
probably will cut him loose. The problem with the Falcons is they
don't have a starting QB on the roster with former first-round bust Joey
Harrington (failed at Detroit / Miami), 'Slash' D.J. Shockley (probably
better at WR/RB) and the original failure Chris Redman, who failed to
stick in Arena Pro tryouts the last two years with Kansas City and
Austin, which is moving down to Af2.
The reviews are in and
they are rave in Houston, as the Texans have never finished higher than
7-9-0 in their short five-yr. NFL history, with current Carolina backup,
Dave Carr as staring pivot. Not that anybody being fair can say it was
ALL Carr's fault. The whole Texan team has been infused with Schaub's
win-it-all attitude, he first showed in Millersville, PA. Then at the
University of Virginia. Schaub is 2-0 as a starter in the NFL lifetime
and says he expects the Texans to win the AFC Central this year. Only
depleted Super Bowl finalist Indianapolis and Jacksonville stand in the
way. Schaub, 6'5" and 237 lbs., and a good runner had impressed the
Owners, Coaches and his fellow players with his work ethic. Most of the
time arriving to the Texans practice facility at 6 a.m. and leaving at
6:30-7 p.m.
In Tampa Bay, Jeff 'Red'
Garcia, who rebounded some last year until he collapsed in the playoffs,
and therein got his release from Philadelphia, rebounded over the two
previous seasons in Detroit and Cleveland where he simply wasn't the old
Red Garcia we grew to like so much in Calgary (CFL) and San Francisco
(three Pro Bowl appearances). Garcia, 37 is going in the opposite
direction from the 27-yr-old stud in Houston, Schaub, in that he is
heading to the far side of a very good career that is starting to see him
pass some pretty big names on the all-time Pro QBing stats chart. Garcia,
in combined Pro (CFL/NFL) stats is damn near 30,000 yds and 200 TDs and
should get both marks this year. I predict both Garcia and Schaub sill be
in the Pro Bowl and both teams will make the playoffs:
AFC Central: (1)
Houston*, (2) Jacksonville*, (3) Indianapolis*, (4) Tennessee
NFC South: (1) New Orlean*, (2) Carolina*, (3) Tampa Bay*, (4) Atlanta
* = These teams will make the playoffs" Moose Salzer

NFL Hall of Fame Picks!
Gene Hickerson, Offensive Guard, Cleveland Browns, 1958-73. 1957
'Futures' seventh round pick. University of Mississippi. Six Pro Bowls
played in, Two-time All-NFL selection. 1960's 'All-NFL All-Decade Team.
Helped lead the Browns to the 1964 NFL Title when they defeated the
Colts, 34-0. Lead blocker for the likes of Hall of Famers FB-RB Leroy
Kelly, and RB-OE Bobby Mitchell, who made
the Hall of Fame for Washington and was later their General Manager.
Cleveland never missed the playoffs during his tenure and never had a
losing season, mainly on account of talent ex-Founder / Coach Paul Brown,
who's family also started the Cincinnati Bengals.
Charlie Sanders, 10-year starting TE, Detroit Lions. 336 Catches, third
most for the position in Pro Football history when he retired, behind
NFL'r's 'Iron' Mike Ditka and John Mackey. Played 1968-77. Played in
seven Pro Bowls and was All-NFL twice. 1970's All-Decade Team starter at
TE. One of the best blocking TEs ever. Records later passed by CFL'r's
Tony Gabriel and Nick Araghki also Ozzie Newsome of the NFL. 6'4", 230
lbs.
Roger Wehrli, Saint Louis
Cardinals CB, 1969-82. Never missed a game. The
game's first 'Lockdown' CB. Seven Pro Bowl games played in. All-Pro NFL 5
times. Missouri native who I will highlight next week when I will be
there. 40 INTs as he was not thrown at much. Defensive Linchpin for the
NFC East Division winners of 1974, 1975. One of the original 'Fellowship
of Christian Athletes.' 6'0", 190 lbs.
Bruce Matthews,
Houston/Tennessee Oilers-Titans franchise, 1983-2001. Nineteen Pro
seasons. Along with CFL'r's Roger Aldag, Chris Walby, Lyle Bauer, Miles
Gorrell and Jamie Taras, one of the greatest OLm of all-time in Pro
Football. Versatile doesn't even begin to tell it! Played all five OLm
positions, the first NFL'r to do it. Centre / Guard / Tackle. Played in
an all-time high (along with ex-U. Utah / L.A. Ram Merlin Olsen DL) 14
Pro Bowls. First Round selection of the Oilers the year Warren Moon got
back from CFL. Played under Ed Biles (Now in Af2 Admin./Team), Hugh
Campbell, Jerry Glanville, Jack Pardee and Jeff Fisher. Nine-time All-NFL
All-Pro. Started 99 games at Centre, 87 at Right Guard, 67 at Left Guard,
22 at Right Tackle, 17 at Left Tackle. Only player to miss Zero games in
the 1990's.
Others missing:
Former Commissioner Paul Tagliabue,
Washington-Philadelphia-N.Y. Jets WR-OE Art Monk (930 catches, no drops,
no fumbles - are you listening Mike Irvin and Thurman Thomas?). Buffalo
great Steve Tasker (6.5 rushing average, 20.7 kick off return average,
12.5 punt return average, 20.5 per catch average, best Special Teams
'gunner' of all-time).
Maddening...Considering he was only the 22nd pick in the draft, QB Brady
Quinn should get his Caucasian keester into the Browns camp as soon as
possible! I have nothing against either Charlie Frye [who should be
third-string]
nor ex-NFL Europa pivot Derek Anderson who would make a good backup, but
neither Browns current QB has the upside of Quinn, who very well could
end up saving embattled Coach Romeo Crenell's job!
Top 10 NFL TEs to
start the 2007 season:
1) Tony Gonzalez, Kansas City Chiefs, (2) Algenon Crumpler, Atlanta,
(3) Antonio Gates, San Diego, (4) Heath Miller, Pittsburgh, (5) Greg
Olson, Chicago [R], (6) Dave Campbell, Detroit, (7)Jeremy H. Shockey,
N.Y. G-Men, (8) Jason Witten, Dallas, (9) Dallas Clark, Indianapolis,
(10) Chris Cooley, Washington." Moose Salzer

"Bill
Walsh dies at a73 years of age!" Moose Salzer
West Coast Offence
inventor Bill Walsh, who recruited John Elway to Stanford, Coached Joe
Montana and San Francisco to three Super Bowl wins, has died at 73 of
leukemia. Walsh will surely go down as one of the top six NFL Coaches and
top 10 NCAA Coaches as well. Walsh, an erudite man from Stanford brought
Jack Elway's son to Stanford, but left shortly for the NFL where he
almost single handedly turned around the moribund San Francisco 49ers.
In three years time,
Walsh helped the 49ers to their first of Five Super Bowl wins. In seven
years time, with QB Joe Montana, the third best QB ever, the 49ers were
in the Super Bowl v. legendary Don Shula with the second-best QB of
all-time Dan Marino. Again the 49ers won. In three more years the 49ers
squared off against their Super Bowl XVI rivals, Boomer Esiason's
Cincinnati Bengals. In one of the greatest Super Bowls in history,
Montana's 49ers edged out the best left handed QB of all-time, Esiason's
Bengals with 34 seconds left, 20-16. In 1982 they beat the Bengals 26-21.
Two years later the Broncos and Elway lost their third Super Bowl overall
to Walsh's 49ers, 55-10. Walsh then retired and broadcast on NBC's NFL
coverage for two years before going back to Stanford.
Walsh had the fourth best
winning percentage in NFL history to John Madden, Don Shula and Marv
Levy. R.I.P., Bill. In other big NFL News...
Curtis
Martin, the N.Y. Jet and former New England Patriot RB has retired after
12 seasons and 14,101 yards and 90 TDs.
This is
seventh in Pro Football history in rushing behind Emmitt Smith, Mike
Pringle, Walter Payton, George Reed, Herschel Walker and Barry Sanders,
just ahead of last years retiree, Jerome Bettis. Martin, drafted by Coach
Bill Parcells when the two were at New England, Martin helped the
Patriots and Parcells to Super Bowl XXXI where they lost to Brett Favre
and Green Bay, 35-21. Martin then left with Parcells where he played out
the remainder of his career with the Jets, missing last season of the
'Physically unable to perform list with right ACL knee surgery.
He came back this spring through mini camp to prove he could come back
(Shades of Earl Campbell with New Orlean under James Earnest Tabor Mora
in 1986), but has decided to retired anyway. He probably wouldn't start
this year. Martin was one of the best pass catching back of all-time.
Probably right behind Miami/Denver/Washington RB Jim Kiick and Colts/Rams
back Marshall Faulk, NE's Kevin's older brother who retired from the Rams
last summer. Martin wants to own either an Ar.FL or NFL club which would
make him the first in Pro Football history." Moose Salzer

"Marshall Faulk, one
of the top 25 players in NFL history has retired last month!" Moose
Salzer
Faulk, who missed last season on injured reserve with the Rams was an
Analyst for HBO and NBC last season. After working hard to recover
from his first ever knee operation and realizing he would have to fight
to make the Rams as the number two RB behind former FB Steve "Now in
Shape" Jackson, decided to retire. Faulk, along with Kurt Warner, who
were both two-time NFL MVPs, helped lead the Rams to the 1999 and 2001
Super Bowls where the Rams, 1-2 lifetime as a franchise, won their first
and only Super Bowl victory, the year ex-CFL'r Trent Green was hurt,
1999-'00.
One of the greatest ever
ball catchers and runners, Faulk was durable and fast. He attended Mira
Mesa High School in San Diego where he played two seasons with ex-Bronco
Super Bowl great, RB Terrell Davis, who surprisingly played Nose Guard
(!). Faulk attended San Diego St. and helped the Aztecs to win one
Conference Championship. He was drafted by the then wretched Indianapolis
Colts and played there until Jerome Bettis played out his option with the
also wretched Saint Louis Rams. Upon leaving the Rams, Bettis had a
stellar career with the Steelers culminating in his only Super Bowl win
in SB 40.
Then Faulk got the break
of a lifetime as ex-NFL Head Coach Dick Vermeil signed on after 14 years
to take over as Rams Coach. Vermeil installed a standard Pro set offence
around the running-pass receiving talents of Faulk. Vermeil then brought
in Green from Washington to pilot the Offence and signed WRs Ricky Proehl, Isaac
Bruce and Tory Holt. Then Vermeil got the break of a lifetime; he picked
up two-time ArenaBowl QB and two-time Arena MVP Kurt Warner. When Green
blew a knee, Warner took over and threw 41 TDs and Faulk rushed for 18.
The Rams beat Tennessee 24-16 in Super Bowl XXXIV. Two years later they
lost, 17-14
to upstart New England on Adam Vinatieri's FG.
Faulk continued to play
very well but was very angry when Vermeil retired and Warner was traded
to the New Jersey Giants. The Rams were competitive with Jamie Martin,
Warner's Super Bowl backup but when Mike Martz took over, he switched to
the Power-I backfield and installed mistake prone Marc Bulger, a turnover
machine at pivot. The Rams, despite getting Martin back, and losing him
again, have gone downhill since and Martz, now the Offencive Coordinator
with the Lions, got fired. Martz also fell in love with an overweight FB
named Steve Jackson, who finally lost weight and gained 1,000 yards last
year. Faulk blew his right knee in Preseason last year and missed the
8-8-0 season for new Coach Scott Linehan.
Marshall Faulk will be remembered for his 8 straight 1,000+ yard seasons
and his contributions to the Rams Super Bowl teams and his two MVP
awards. Current Arizona QB Kurt Warner recently said, "Marshall Faulk is
the best football player I ever played with, in any of the three Leagues
(Ar.FL / NFL / NFL E) I played in." I couldn't put it any better. I place
Faulk as the sixth best RB I've ever seen after Walter Payton, Mike
Pringle, Emmitt Smith, Larry Csonka, Herschel Walker.
More NFL Offseason moves.
Shakeup at MNF. 'Jaws' Jaworski in, Joe 'Tees-mon' out. Monday Night
Football's lineup changed but not for the better recently when ABC-ESPN
announced they were keeping heinous Suzy Kobler and dopey Tony Kornheiser
over Joe Thiesmann despite the fact fans don't like either. I think Joe
Thiesmann the ex-CFL/NFL star would be a perfect fit with leadman
Mike Tirico and ex-Philadelphia Super Bowl QB Ron Jaworski, the
part-owner of the Ar.FL's Philadelphia Soul (Moxie's team). Both 'Jaws'
and Joey T. QB'd against one another in the late '70's and
throughout much of the '80's until Theismann's Monday Night Football
injury in 1985. Thiesmann played 15 years and Jaworski 17, respectfully.
The irony about this is
that Theismann is under contract for one more year and REFUSED to do
ESPN online and NCAA games, even though I think Joe T., ex-of Notre Dame
and Doug Flutie, ex-of Boston College would work well. Flutie will work
with Bob Griese, three-time Super Bowl QB himself and father of Bears
Super Bowl backup pivot Brian." Moose

"Here
is my NFL Draft Report for 2007! Browns Strike Gold with Notre Dame
stud QB!" Moose Salzer
The first question
everybody will want to know is who won the NFL Draft, held this past
weekend. Cleveland, Detroit and Carolina. Who lost? Nobody really, but
Denver, Washington and Arizona more or less lost because they only had
four or five picks each - bad trades the last couple years took care of
that! Here's the Breakdown from MYKwebTV South - in the Province of
Virginia. Also keep an eye on the comeback of Akili Smith with Calgary!
Arizona - Grade B.
Cardinals did not do that badly, considering they only had five picks
[Washington also only had five and the Broncos a paltry four!!]. Top pick
for the Redbirds was: Former Maury (Norfolk, VA) High School'r, OT Levi
Brown from THE Penn State. He'll help Kurt Warner and Mark Leinart stand
upright this year and complete more passes as he will start on the Cards
awful Offencive Line.
Atlanta - C+.
Quantity over Quality. With Matt Schaub gone, the Falcons (or is it
'Fowl-Kins'0 need QBing help badly as Mike Vick is in trouble off the
field again [When are the Falcs gonna dump 'im?). Instead they took DL,
DBs and Offencive skill players. Them aside, most of whom won't play
regularly this year, new Coach Bobby (No Nonsense) Petrino from
Louisville and Vick are on a collision course. Too bad the Croc Hunter
isn't around anymore to help! Crickey, mates!!
Baltimore - B.
Underrated Troy Smith can play right now - at QB or WR. Expect the
Ravens, who last won a Super Bowl in '01, to utilize McNair for two more
years, tops. Smith should be ready by then. Scott Terna's guy! Also:
Yamon Figures should be OK as an extra WR soon, too.
Buffalo - B+.
Morency will like these guys especially Penn St.'s LBing stud, Paul
Posluszny a kind of a cross between Urlacher and A.J. Hawk, who he used
to play beside. Also: Ex-Hawai'i Warrior and Oklahoma DE C.J. Ah You,
who's dad Tiana (Junior) Ah You was the first player from Hawai'i to make
the CFL's Hall of Fame. Junior Ah You played 14 Pro Seasons between the
CFL and USFL at DE.
Carolina - A.
Coach John (Sly as a) Fox, our man from Virginia Beach, VA, is back at it
again. Anybody want to bet that the Panthers won't challenge for the
Super Bowl like in '07-'08? No takers? I can relate. Dig: LB Jon Beason,
The Miami U., Dante Rosario, TE, Oregon St. and Centre Ryan Kalil from
USC will start right away.
Chicago - B+.
Another good draft for Coach Lovie Smith's crew. But they picked no QB.
Guess Brian Griese, son of the NFL legend and what's his name
(Gross-Man?) will fight for the job again. Best pick, says me; TE Greg
Olsen, Miami FL.
Cincinnati - B. I
like DT Mat Toeaina, Oregon (Just) Ducks. The other four picks are quite
good too. The Bengals at least tried to address what few needs they
needed.
Cleveland - A.
Yes, they traded up. And yes they STOLE Brady Quinn, easily the best QB
in the draft (sorry Drew Stanton...). Brady will give the Brownies the
best season they've had since '94. Other picks to note are: OT Joe Thomas
and Hawai'i DE Mel Purcell, III. E Mua! Browns number one - in Ohio?
We'll see. Headed in the right direction.
Dallas - B-. Well,
at least they got a K! Recently they picked up ex-Super Bowl winner Brad
Johnson to replace retired Drew Bledsoe behind Tony Romo's Place For
Ribs. Arizona's Nick Polk will be the Kicking answer. I like Alan Ball
too.
Denver - D-. Only
four picks. What the Broncos needed were QBs, RBs, DBs. What they got was
crap! Three average-to-luke-warm DL and one overrated OT. Is there a
conspiracy going on in Mile High City? They lost three players in the
off-season to deaths and retirement and desperately need Offencive skill
players...Are they playing for the 2008 Top Pick? Seems so...
Oakland - C++.
Well, at least they had more picks and used them better than the puzzling
Broncos. Maybe they can escape the cellar of the AFC West this year after
all. The pick of Russell (6'5.5", 256 lbs.) at QB insures they will have
a great TE (!) someday...Russell will probably not make it as a QB. They
should have gotten Stanton or Brady. Russell is a good kid but a 'System'
QB. If they finish 2-14-0 again next year and DON'T escape the cellar,
they can spend a first round pick wisely on Hawai'i's stud QB Colt
Brennan, who threw the NCAA's all-time record 58 TDs last year ('06). The
rest of the picks are not bad, but they blew it in the 1st rd.
Detroit - A. What
the Hell? Matt Millen DID SOMETHING RIGHT AS G.M.?!?!? Damn right! What a
draft! The second best QB in the draft, Michigan St.'s Drew Stanton,
6'4", 234 lbs, a stud who can throw 80 yards and run with 4.45 speed! How
about Hawai'i DE Ikaika Alama-Francis, who can also play TE and is the
son of NFL legend Russ Francis? Johnny Baldwin, LB Alabama...WR Calvin
Johnson, 6'5", 232...Man, good picks.
Green Bay - B.
Justin Harrell, DT from Tennessee is a very good pick. The rest are
almost as good. A solid draft for Mike McCoy's mob. Maybe Brett can make
the playoffs one more time.
Houston - B+.
Virginia Tech's OL Brandon Frye is the best pick - for now and Amobi
Okoye, DE will help Williams right away on the Defencive front. Three
more picks could make the team too. Coach Kubiak has seven ex-Broncos
here now too.
Indianapolis - C+.
Not really what they need most, like WR help for Marvin Harrison, one of
the top five WRs in NFL history; Ricky Proehl has taken his two Super
Bowl rings and retired. Brando Stokley signed for $2.2/mil. with those
rapidly shrinking Broncos. The best of the lot here for immediate help
are: Mike Coe and Bran Condren, DBs.
Jacksonville - B.
Derek Landri, DE, Notre Dame will start almost right away and Adam Polesh,
P/H from Maryland are top choices for Jak Del Rio's hard luck bunch.
Kansas City - B+.
RB Koby Smith will be second string right away, unless the Chiefs really
do move Casey Printers to RB/WR. Dwayne Bowe replaces two Cheifs WRs
who've left. Can RB Priest Holmes, one of the great Pro Bowl players ever
come back? Say a prayer for Preist!
Miami - A-. Well,
they'll never get Don Shula and Larry Csonka back, but at least nutty
Nick Saban was let go at the end of the year. Duante Culpepper's career
is in limbo and Cleo Lemon, the ex-NFL E / Af2 pivot will have to fight
to hang onto his starting job. Joey Harrington was traded to Atlanta,
which is also good for Miami! Beck won't be more than a third stringer in
the NFL but two Hawai'i players are worth letting fight for the starting
jobs; RB Regan Mauia (5'11.5", 303 lbs - can you say FB?) and OG Sam
Satele, who started 53 of 57 games at U/H. Ted Ginn, Jr. will struggle
for playing time this year but will return Ks.
Minnesota - C+. See Indy and Oakland. Quantity over Quality.
Oklahoma RB Adrian Peterson will help, some. But they need a QB badly.
They drafted a potential 'slash' in Tyler from Costal Carolina (that
school's first ever drafted by the NFL), but look for a surprise like Sid
Rice, WR, So. Carolina, who played for Coach Ballgame there.
New England - C+.
They just acquired Randy Moss. The group of picks Belichick and
Co. have gotten are above average.
New Orleans - B+ .
The best deal in 'Big Easy' Country (besides ArenaBowl XXI on July
29th...) is that they STOLE Cincinnati's best DB, ex-Ar.FL/XFL star Kevin
Kaesviharn, who has 20 INTs in the last three years in the League. Of the
draft picks here - look for Antonio Pittman, RB/WR to help out right
away. They are now the deepest team in the league at RB. Andy Alleman, G,
Akron is a smart pick too.
N.Y. Giants - C-.
Needs? A decent QB but they get a DB, Aaron Ross, who problems.
New York Jets - C-. Best pick: Darrelle Revis DB, Pittsburgh.
Philadelphia - B.
We see why the Eagles let Jeff Garcia and Timmy Chang go. They got the QB
of the future in Kevin Kolb, 4-yr., starter in U/Houston. Hawai'i RB Nate
Ilaoa, from Virginia h.s. league will play right away soon too. Moose
